G. V. Prakash Kumar is known for his multiple talents and he is now coming with a fantasy entertainer Kingston under the direction of Kamal Prakash, a new comer. Let us see what thrills the film which is releasing on 7 March 2025 has it in store for movie lovers.
Kingston story revolves around the happenings near the coastal region and the curse it is haunted with and how few dared to overcome it and the happenings associated with them. Kingston (G. V. Prakash Kumar), a daring person who works as a smuggler in the coastal region decides to take on his bosses including Thomas (Sabumon Abdusamad) when he comes to know that they are involved in drug trafficking.
However, he will be in for more trouble when he finds his girlfriend Divya (Divyabharathi) is kidnapped and he has to not only take on the known enemies but also the hidden and unforeseen danger in the form of a decade long curse. Where this leads to and what is its connection to his grandfather Solomon (Chetan Kadambi) form the twists and turns.
G. V. Prakash Kumar effortlessly slipped into the role of a smuggler. He showed the carefree swag and attitude of the smuggler to make an impression. He showed good variations in body language and emoted and expressed well while delivering dialogues.
Divyabharathi looked good on screen and played the supporting part quite well. Others like Azhagam Perumal. Chetan, Elango Kumaravel, Antony,Ram Nishanth,Rajesh Balachandiran,Sabumon Abdusamad did justice to their roles with their performances.
Kingston story is penned by Kamal Prakash, a newcomer. He came up with an interesting plot but instead of developing into an exciting one with the gripping screenplay, he concentrated on rich visuals and this impacted the final output. Though the story sounded interesting, the screenplay looked confusing and muddled and inturn left viewers wondering what he is up to.
He included elements in the first half to thrill and scare movie lovers. The flashback episodes and few sounds will have the desired impact. However there are many drags that slowed the narration. However the pre interval scenes excite all.
The real story starts in the second half. The horror elements, zombies evoke few laughs but the narration is impacted by slow pace and tamil flavour. The missing emotions played the spoilsport. Various plots and subplots and flashback scenes inturn confused all though the is fine. Hand care been taken regarding screenplay, things would have been different.
Gokul Benoy's cinematography added value to the film. The visuals are appealing and the VFX and CGI gave good feel to the movie lovers. Infact the visuals are striking. The music of GV.Prakash Kumar is decent and background music elevated the scenes. Editing of San Lokesh could have been far better. The slow pace and dragging scenes irritated the viewers. Production values are good.
Altogether, Kingston turns out to be rich on visuals and poor in content. G. V. Prakash Kumar came up with a spirited performance and director Kamal Prakash on debut came up with interesting and exciting idea. However he failed to replicate the same on the big screen. Little fine-tuning of the script and reworking on the screenplay would have added value to the film bringing change in the final output. Considering all these elements, Cinejosh goes with a 2 star rating for Kingston.
